neomycin (ne″o-mi´sin)   a broad-spectrum aminoglycosideantibiotic produced by Streptomyces fradiae, effective against a wide range of gram-negative bacilli and some gram-positive bacteria. It is used, as the sulfate salt, for urinary tract irrigation, administered orally to prepare the bowel for surgery, and applied to the skin, eyes, and ears to treat infections due to susceptible organisms. In topical preparations it is often combined with other antibiotics or antiinflammatory steroids.
